Then-and-Now Comparison

Witness Tree 05, with its distinctive double-stem or forked trunk, is the most easily recognizable of the West Confederate Avenue witness trees. This large white oak, with a diameter of well over a yard, was captured in a 1900s photograph released by the Rotograph Company as a turn of the century postcard.

The postcard has been cropped slightly to help more clearly show Witness Tree 05.

Label “A” identifies the Pegram’s Battalion tablet. Tree “X” is no longer extant.

The well-known white oak trees standing on the road can also be seen on the right edge of the photographs.
