How to Find Witness Tree 09

The first battery to the south of the Pegram’s Battalion tablet is Crenshaw’s Battery. Stand between cannon #1 and #2. Witness Tree 09, a pignut hickory, stands very close to the road, immediately on the opposite, or west, side of West Confederate Avenue.

Then-and-Now Comparison

Witness Tree 09 appears in a century-old photograph published in a 1931 soft-cover guidebook to the Battle of Gettysburg, written by William Storrick.

It can be seen that this tree, typically of hickories, has grown very little in a hundred years.

Our hickory Witness Tree 09 also appears in a colorized postcard printed in the 1900s by the Rotograph Company, and can be seen on the page featuring Witness Tree 06.
