Tree C

Tree C is missing!

Today, there rises a quite large white oak tree in a spot between cannons e1 and e2, the northernmost guns of the Fredericksburg Artillery on West Confederate Avenue. With a circumference of 94 inches (and diameter of 30 inches), this tree should be a witness tree. Even if it has been an unusually fast-growing tree, it should at least appear in the 1911 panorama photograph of the Fredericksburg Artillery, even if only a small tree. However, the tree is completely missing from the old photograph!

This is why one should be reluctant to definitively call any tree a witness tree without additional proof beyond its size.
